The Feminine Landscape

The Feminine Landscape is a series of (mostly) self-portraits, bringing together both landscape and portrait genres.

It was born in May of 2012, when I photographed myself in a lyrical glade of ferns near Havasupai Falls in Grand Canyon. Although the project is semi-retired now, I do occasionally resurrect it when I feel very compelled to do so.

In these images, the landscape, the place, is equally as important as the figure. My scenes can generally stand alone as landscapes, since I'm primarily a landscape photographer, and the story I'm telling is always the wonder of place as well as a presentation of the female gaze upon the land as a reaction to the fact that landscape photographs are most often presented from a male POV, or at least with a more masculine aesthetic. The moments I present are less about drama and more about quiet connection and metaphor.
