Update: The Riversong Project
For the last couple of months I have been intensely focused on the creation of my newest endeavor, The Riversong Project, and today I’d like to write a little bit about the what, where, why, and how.
The Riversong Project is comprised of two parts:
1. Riversong, a solo exhibit of landscape and nature photography of the New River Gorge in West Virginia opening at 6pm on Saturday, November 12th in the Hope Gallery at Love Hope Center for the Arts, located at 100 Rotan Street in Fayetteville, West Virginia. The exhibit runs through January 15th, and all items are for sale.
2. An ebook entitled Riversong: Creative, Holistic Approaches to Photographing New River Gorge which presents the both the artistic context and the technical approach of my images, many of them featured in the exhibit. The ebook will drop on my website at the same time the exhibit opens.
Below is an excerpt from the ebook that briefly explains the background of how I came to know and love this area:
“In January and February of 2022, I lived in the lovely little town of Fayetteville, West Virginia, perched on the very edge of New River Gorge National Park & Preserve. I was one of three fortunate souls to be offered the role of Creative Resident that winter by the owners of Lafayette Flats (a boutique vacation rental in Fayetteville), Amy McLaughlin and Shawn Means. I spent my days inside the National Park with just my thoughts and my camera equipment. It was a personally challenging time for me; I had a family health scare immediately prior to my arrival at the park and so I arrived with the weight of worry on my mind, the weather was extreme with unrelenting bitter cold, snow and ice for weeks on end, and I had some mechanical challenges with my car. But it was also a deeply rewarding time. I’ve never before had the luxury of being able to focus completely and utterly on getting to know a landscape and making images of what I find and learn and feel. I considered it a huge privilege to have been given the opportunity, and I worked hard to make the most of it. Much of the work in this book was made during that time (though some of the images were made before or since then). I’ve been visiting the area since before its 2020 National Park designation, and having spent time living there and connecting with it on a daily basis, I now feel a kinship with this special and unique place. I’m excited to continue to spend time there, especially in light of the fact that there is so much more for me to see.”
I’ve included some of the work from this project for you to see below. These images may appear in either the exhibit or the ebook or both. Click on them to see them full size.
