Announcement: The Riversong Project

The New River, silvery blue, winds through the gorge at New River Gorge National Park and Preserve in West Virginia.

I am currently in full planning and creative mode as I work to pull together my next endeavor: The Riversong Project. This will be the culmination of my winter creative residency in Fayetteville, West Virginia, where I created a body of work over the course of a month spent living and working in and around our nation’s newest national park, New River Gorge National Park and Preserve. In the months since then, I have been working on processing that work and pulling it into a cohesive and meaningful project of substance.

The Riversong Project is comprised of two separate but connected elements:

  • The Riversong solo exhibition at Love Hope Center for the Arts in Fayetteville, West Virginia will open on November 12th and run through early next year. This show will feature work made before, during, and since my residency, and will be focused on the New River Gorge and its environs. Framed work, unframed prints, and smaller items such as Petite Portfolios will be available to purchase with gift-giving season right around the corner.

  • Riversong: Creative, Holistic Approaches to Photographing the New River Gorge is an ebook presenting my own approaches to photographing this landscape. Each chapter presents an image (or group of images) with an essay that discusses the image holistically, including both the technical or practical context as well as the emotional context. If an image is considered a “song,” then that song is comprised of more than just the notes and lyrics. The emotional content of the piece is just as much a part of the final product, and I discuss this element of my creative process. Topics vary by chapter, but may include photographic techniques employed, inspirations such as music, art, poetry, maybe there was something significant or revelatory about the experience of making an image, or perhaps a location or image holds a special meaning to me. The book offers a peek behind the curtain of my creative mind, and is primarily intended to be an inspirational tool for those interested in photographing this unique location, though the concepts can translate to photography at any location. The ebook will be published at the same time the exhibit opens, and will be available for purchase here on my website.

I’ll be sharing more information with you as I firm things up. I am still writing the book, and just beginning the process of printing and framing pieces for the exhibit. If you want to be sure to be notified of the details, be sure to sign up for my newsletter by submitting the form below.
