Iβm a landscape and nature photographer, educator, and author based in the Appalachian mountains with a focus on connection and expression.
Iβm excited to share my work and ethos with you, and Iβd love to work with you to help you elevate your artistry, develop your skills, and discover your own voice as a photographer through my new learning resource, The Art of Place.
Iβve always been intrigued by places - far away, close to home, and everything in between. Places have mapped my life and punctuated my story. Some places called to me and tempted me. Some felt like home, but proved not to be. And others changed my life, let me down, or made me sad.
As a child in England, I was enchanted by trails along streams and between fields. In college I studied the biology and the geography of the deep South. And today, as a landscape photographer, I love to explore the most remote places on earth. As a child of modern-day nomads, I moved frequently around the world with my family. This process of uprooting and putting down roots over and over again allowed me to become adept at coming to know a place from scratch and at being able to see with completely fresh eyes. Having to find a way to belong, over and over, gave me a fundamental understanding: that every place has its magic.
As a photographer, my role is not only to observe, experience, and document the nuances of a landscape - I strive for my work to also be a reflection of my inner journey, that seeking out of wonder and peace and, most importantly, that elusive sense of connection and belonging. Ultimately, photographing the landscapes I visit is like putting roots down repeatedly, just as I did in my childhood, seeking out the intersection between myself and this place, finding the way in which I belong here.
Is this a place that speaks to my love for certain colors? Where does its magic lie? Will I find it in a rising fog as it dances amongst the hemlock trees on a mountain ridge line? Or perhaps itβs in the way the dreamy light grazes the soft curve of the hill I love to stand on. What is it about this place that speaks to my soul and makes me feel a part of it, as though I belong here?
How does this place feel like home?
